With today's abundance of digital toys and devices, children of this generation are exposed to technology from the day they are born. Many of these devices are connected to the Internet, which brings the world to their fingertips, provides them with educational opportunities, entertainment and connections to friends and family through social media. Just like the physical world, however, cyberspace has its dark alleys and shifty characters. Limit your children's access to the seedy side of the net by following a few best practices:

    •  ss0702Don't let your children use your accounts. Set them up with their own user accounts or use apps that create a "sandbox" within your device, limiting access to pre-defined websites or applications.
    • Educate your children about the dangers of oversharing on social media, including personal information such as full name, date of birth, physical and e-mail addresses, phone number, and photos. Remind them to only connect with or "friend" people they know in real life.
    • Enable passwords or PINs on all devices. Be prepared for your younger children to frequently ask you to enter the password. This is a good way of monitoring apps they are trying to download.
    • Don't give your children your home network or router password, or your work-related passwords.
    • Place your home computer in a location where you can easily see what your children are doing.
    • Do not let your children (or anyone else) use your company-provided devices!

Kids are targets too, and they need your help to understand the risks and to make good choices. For more tips and tricks for home and work, visit our Secure I.T. page on Knect. Questions? E-mail us at SecureIT@kindred.com
