Jupiter was the unfortunate victim of a violent assault that caused him to experience an intracranial bleed, altered mental status and a severe septic infection.

He was hospitalized at an acute care facility until he had been stabilized and then transferred to Kindred Hospital Santa Ana. Jupiter’s condition was still critical, and he required dedicated care from his interdisciplinary team to help him overcome the challenges he faced. His speech-language pathologist was instrumental in helping Jupiter begin to regain his cognitive faculties and ability to communicate, as well as to drink and eat a regular diet. His rehab team started with simple therapy exercises to help Jupiter regain his fine motor skills and, as he became stronger, he began to do more and steadily improved until he regained the ability to stand up and walk.

A short while after he had left Kindred, his mother reported that Jupiter continues to improve and is doing much better all around. “Thanks to everyone at Kindred!” she shared.
Shelly

Shelly had been in an acute care facility for an extended period of time for COVID-like symptoms.

She was admitted for respiratory failure, placed on a ventilator and started to receive treatment with broad-spectrum IV antibiotics. When she had finally been stabilized, Shelly was transferred to Kindred Hospital Santa Ana to receive respiratory therapy, wound care to treat the amputation of her left leg below the knee, and rehabilitation to help her regain her strength and mobility. Shelly completed her IV antibiotic therapy and made great progress with her respiratory team, steadily improving until she no longer required assistance from the vent and could breathe on her own. She then was able to work diligently with her rehab team as they helped her regain her strength, mobility and independence over the tasks of daily life. Now able to propel herself in a wheelchair, Shelly also began to learn how to walk using her prosthetic leg and was ready to return home with her husband.
“You guys here at Kindred are great!” Shelly shared before she was discharged. “Especially Raul in rehab and Dennis who was always there for me when I needed help.”
“Everyone on her team went beyond wonderful,” Shelly’s husband added. “Just knowing she can go home now is a miracle.”

Hugo came to Kindred Hospital Santa Ana after being at an acute care facility where he had experienced numerous complications.

He was admitted to receive treatment for a severe abdominal wound and antibiotic therapy for acute sepsis. Under the care of a multidisciplinary team, Hugo began to receive comprehensive wound care and respiratory therapy. At the beginning he required significant assistance for all his needs due to his profound weakness and lack of mobility, but he was determined and highly motivated to recover and Hugo made steady progress during his stay. Once he was successfully weaned from respiratory support and as his wound healed, he was able to begin working with his rehab team to reclaim his strength and independence over the tasks of daily life. During the course of his stay at Kindred, Hugo reached all the recovery goals set by his team at the time of admission and was able to be discharged to return home with his family.
