Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine

We have developed a comprehensive outpatient Wound Care Program at our Louisville Wound Care Institute located within our hospital.  You may benefit from our wound care services if you require ongoing medical management of problematic wounds. As a leader in wound care management, we strive to provide patients positive outcomes and restore patients to their optimal level of function.

The Louisville Wound Care Institute is staffed with experienced specialists, representing all disciplines and trained to care for all types of wounds.

Types of wounds treated include:

  • Diabetic wounds
  • Arterial ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Venous stasis ulcers
  • Trauma wounds/crushing injuries
  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Complex soft tissue wounds
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Radiation tissue damage
  • Osteoradionecrosis

To treat many of the most common wounds, we provide hyperbaric oxygen therapy through two Sechrist 3200 hyperbaric oxygen chambers. The Institute has a fully trained hyperbaric staff.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is the use of 100% oxygen under greater than normal atmospheric pressures to increase the delivery of oxygen to the tissues. In wound care, HBOT is used for select chronic, non-healing wounds, osteomyelitis, and failing skin grafts and flaps. The compromised tissue is super-saturated with oxygen and new capillary growth occurs. Healing occurs in a shorter time frame and patients will be given a treatment plan tailored to their individual medical needs.
