Investing in Our People

For the fourth consecutive year Kindred Healthcare has been named one of the Most Admired Healthcare Companies by Fortune Magazine. We are all proud of our good reputation, but this designation is a direct result of the dedication and hard work our clinicians and caregivers provide each day.

We work hard to attract and retain outstanding and talented individuals. In order to do so, we believe strongly in investing in our employees’ health, their education and professional growth.

As we highlighted in our 2011 Quality and Social Responsibility Report, last year we built upon our commitment to our employees. In 2011, we invested nearly $450 Million in Kindred professionals including $34.7 million in employee training, $2.4 million in tuition reimbursement and over $30 million in employee recognition and bonus programs for non-management employees throughout the year. We believe this contributed to the fact that, once again, retention rates for each division increased last year.

Reaffirming our belief that our employees who provide such great care to our patients, residents and clients should take care of their own health, last year we covered more than 61,000 employees and dependents through our medical plan.

An important part of the Kindred mission is to take care of each other, and I am always impressed with the way in which we respond to tragedies such as the recent tornadoes that hit the mid-west.  As a company we assisted those employees affected by the tragedies with financial support from our internal HOPE (Helping Others Persevere through Emergencies) Fund. In partnership with the Red Cross, our employees – with matching corporate donations – have already raised $60,000 to provide assistance and support to the families and communities so tragically affected by the tornadoes.  I couldn’t be more proud!

Quality care and customer satisfaction are directly related to the skills, dedication and professionalism of a healthcare providers employees. Judging from our Quality Report, this remains true at Kindred, and we thank all of our dedicated employees for their ongoing efforts to pursue quality care, and for making us one of Fortune’s Most Admired!
