The 2011 Kindred Heart Walk Team showed great dedication and walked through the rain! The 2011 Kindred Heart Walk Team showed great dedication and walked through the rain!

As in years past, Kindred will take part in this year’s American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk, which takes place on Sept. 22. “The Heart Walk is a large community event designed to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of all Americans,” says Kathy Renbarger, Executive Director/Metro Vice President, American Heart Association. “People who are affected by heart disease, and health care organizations that treat patients with heart disease, participate by developing corporate teams to raise money for research, education, community programs, and advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels. Thousands of passionate walkers join together on Walk Day to celebrate lifestyle changes and program advances.”

Kindred’s involvement in this cause takes several forms. “Kindred is our largest supporter in terms of year-round participation in Heart Walk activities,” says Renbarger. “They participate in our ‘Start Walking Day,’ which is an initiative to encourage employees to be physically active at work. Kindred executives speak at our annual Leadership Breakfast. Paul Diaz and his family attend the Heart Walk, and his children lead the countdown to begin the walk. Kindred employees also form top fundraising corporate teams, last year raising $37,000 in addition to generous sponsorship support.”

The AHA is one of three key healthcare-related, non-profit organizations with which Kindred has developed strong partnerships because their values are closely aligned with Kindred’s (the other two are the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Lung Association). “Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable,” Renbarger says. “In terms of the patients that Kindred serves, we believe the AHA makes a difference in improving their health through our research and advocacy efforts, and our educational resources. And by providing health and wellness resources to Kindred’s employees as well, we are helping them to lead healthier lives, increasing their knowledge of healthy choices, and improving productivity.”
