The 2012 Kindred Support Center Heart Walk team

Kindred Healthcare is excited to support the American Heart Association’s largest fundraiser, the Heart Walk, on a national level across all Kindred facilities. Our goal is to raise a combined total of $160,000. In addition to helping fight the #1 and #4 killers of American men and women, heart disease and stroke, this great family-friendly event offers great team-building opportunities in local facilities as well as access to the American Heart Association’s exceptional wellness tools.

The American Heart Association’s mission is one that Kindred believes in. They strive to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable. Research, advocacy efforts and educational resources are funded by the money raised by Heart Walk participants.

Every day, Kindred cares for patients and residents who suffer from heart-related diseases. We see firsthand the effect these diseases have on patients, residents and their families. The term heart disease is used to describe several problems related to the buildup of plaque in the arterial walls. As the plaque builds up it narrows arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk for heart attack or stroke. Other types of heart disease include heart valve problems, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and heart failure. To learn more about heart disease and the conditions that can lead to it, click here.

Recently Susan Moss, Vice President of Enterprise Marketing and Communications for Kindred, shared her personal story of heart disease that landed her in the exact spot in the heart hospital that she had worked so hard to avoid.

The Support Center and teams from surrounding Kindred facilities will be participating in the Kentuckiana Heart Walk on Saturday, September 21. To date, we have 21 teams and 73 walkers with current fundraising totals exceeding $19,000.

Heart Walks are taking place all around the country at different locations and dates.
