Karen Schulkin, a nurse with Professional Healthcare at Home, an affiliate of Kindred at Home, has been named a Top 10 Finalist for the 2014 Home Care & Hospice Nurse of the Year Award presented by the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC).

Annually, NAHC promotes a nationwide recognition campaign that asks its members, affiliates and the public to help choose a top home care and hospice nurse from every state. NAHC recognizes nurses for providing exceptional care, reducing hospital readmissions and making a difference in patients’ lives. A public vote determines the winning nurse from the top 10 finalists featured on their website.

Professional Healthcare at Home nominated Karen for Nurse of the Year before she was selected by a committee of experts to represent California. Karen shared a story of caring and commitment for one of her patients:

Karen SchulkinI’m Karen Schulkin, and I’m a nurse at Professional Healthcare at Home, an affiliate of Kindred at Home in Pleasant Hill, CA. My 65-year-old patient, Brian Hanson, has PVD, kidney disease and CHF which makes him O2 dependent. When I began giving him wound care and pain management, he smoked heavily, took lots of pain medication and ate poorly. He was living in a hotel room with no kitchen in a crime-infested neighborhood. I was moved by his difficult circumstances, and his stories of childhood tragedies, drugs and prison. With my encouragement, he quit smoking and began managing his medications. I also arranged for Meals on Wheels, helped him get his power chair working, found donated cooking appliances, and helped him adopt a rescue dog, Mandy. Now he gets fresh vegetables and is learning to cook. He takes Mandy everywhere and both are thriving. Today, he is a different man.

Karen not only provided healthcare to Brian, but a personal companionship that changed his life. Schulkin is a shining example of quality, compassionate care. Professional Healthcare at Home and Kindred at Home are proud to have her represent California as one of the most caring nurses in the nation.

Online voting runs through September 30, 2014. Click here to review the finalists and cast your vote. The winner will be announced at the NAHC Annual Meeting & Exposition in October.

Congratulations on your nomination and best of luck, Karen.
