Kindred Continues Growth of Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital Business in Partnership with Leading Health Systems

Company now operates 22 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in 11 states

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 12, 2018) – Kindred Healthcare, LLC (“Kindred”) today announced the opening of Community Rehabilitation Hospital South in partnership with Community Health Network (“Community”). The 44-bed hospital is located in Greenwood, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis.

The hospital is located at a site that formerly housed a Kindred long-term acute care (“LTAC”) hospital. Kindred continues to operate two LTAC hospitals in the Indianapolis market. This is the third joint venture partnership between Kindred and Community, adding to their existing joint ventures involving Community Rehabilitation Hospital North in Northeast Indianapolis and Community Howard Specialty Hospital in Kokomo.

With the opening of Community Rehabilitation Hospital South, Kindred now operates 22 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, also known as “IRFs,” in 11 states. The majority of the hospitals are operated in partnership with leading health systems. These hospitals care for adults recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and other conditions.

In addition to opening Community Rehabilitation Hospital South, Kindred has opened two new IRFs and begun construction on two others in 2018.

  • In Tacoma, Washington, Kindred opened CHI Franciscan Rehabilitation Hospital in partnership with CHI Franciscan Health. The 60-bed hospital is western Washington’s first and only freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital.
  • In the Des Moines, Iowa, suburb of Clive, Kindred and Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines opened Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital. The 50-bed hospital is Iowa’s first and only freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital.
